A little bit of background………

The Grief Recovery Method was developed by John W James and Russell Friedman, whom also founded the Grief Recovery Institute in the USA; The Grief Recovery Method has helped many tens of thousands of people around the world over the last 30 years.

What is it?

The Grief Recovery Programme has been designed to provide you with a series of small steps, that when taken in order, will lead you to the completion of all the unresolved grief linked to your loss.

Coupled with the help and support of your Grief Recovery Specialist (Janine Hailey), the programme will help you to move beyond the pain caused by your loss and move towards a regained sense of well-being.

How is Grief Recovery different? 

Grief is an emotion. When we grieve our hearts feel broken. However most traditional methods of grief /bereavement support use an intellectual or psychological approach to try to solve the problem, when actually there’s nothing wrong with a grievers head! At Grief Support Services  we don’t concentrate on fixing heads, but instead we help fix broken hearts.

We do this by using the Grief Recovery Method, primarily as an education tool for simply re-educating people about the way they think, and deal with grief.

What do you mean by grief?

  • Grief is the normal and natural reaction to significant emotional loss of any kind.
  • Grief can be the conflicting feelings caused by the end of, or change in, a familiar pattern of behaviour.
  • Grief can be the feeling of reaching out for someone who has always been there, only to find when you need them again, they are no longer there. What should be remembered is that grief is individual and unique.

So if Grief is normal what’s the problem? 

The problem is that while grief is a natural emotion most of what society teaches us about it, and how to deal with it, is intellectual. You can’t fix a feeling using a rational argument – yet our friends, family and some professionals try to regularly.

For example, following a death they may say “don’t be upset she’s out of pain” while the second half of this statement may be technically (rationally) true, it is emotionally barren. They’ve moved the subject away from your feelings and on to those of the person who died. This intellectualisation of grief is so engrained we barely notice it anymore.

We just know when people make comments they are by and large unhelpful or even hurtful despite being uttered with the best of intentions. Over the years of working with many thousands of grievers, the Grief Recovery Method recognises that the 6 myths associated with loss first identified by John James are almost wholly universal.

Sadly our society does not teach us how to cope with our grief. We are merely expected to “get over it in time”. But how long are we supposed to wait for the pain to go away? A month? A year? A lifetime?

The truth is that all time does is pass. It is the actions you take during that time that determine how completely you recover. The Grief Recovery Method teaches you the correct actions so you don’t have to hopelessly wait in pain.

One to One Programme

Your heart is broken and you know you need help but you are not sure what to do next. The good news is that we can help you each step of the way. The One to One Programme is exactly what it suggests – you work on your own recovery, whilst all the time being guided by your very own experienced Certified Grief Recovery Specialist.

So, if you feel like you are just “existing”, or “coping” rather than living fully, then this programme is definitely for you. There is no need to wait – no matter how recent your loss, The Grief Recovery Method can be used to complete the unfinished business generated by any loss and allow you to return to a full state of “aliveness”.

What is the Grief Recovery Method One-to-One Action Programme? 

It is a powerful, dynamic, and accessible programme that is genuinely for anyone willing to take the necessary actions to help themselves.

The programme starts with an introduction session where I meet you to discuss the programme, and it is just a general “get to know each other” session. We will then have a further 6 sessions (usually held weekly) where I will guide and support you through the actions and tasks required to complete the programme. We will use the Grief Recovery Handbook as the reference book to support your learning and journey to completion of the programme.

In summary, you will look at your old beliefs and behaviours, examine what losses you have experienced through your life; then learn and take the actions that will help you complete the pain attached to those losses and let it go.

It is your journey and you will need to engage and participate in order to get the best possible results.

Group Workshop 

Your heart is broken and you know you need help but you are not sure what to do next. The good news is that we can help you each step of the way. The Grief Recovery Group Programme is exactly what it suggests – you work on your own recovery, but as part of a supported group, with people whom are doing exactly the same.

The group workshop is a safe environment that allows you to share and articulate your feelings whilst actively taking part and supporting others whilst they share their feelings. The group workshop is guided, supported and facilitated by your Certified Grief Recovery Specialist, Janine Hailey.
